” Honor and respect to our ancestral grandmothers who braided seeds and promise into their hair before being forced onto transatlantic slave ships. They believed, against odds, that we, their descendents would exist to inherit, plant, and pass on that seed. The Braiding Seeds Fellowship, a project of Soul Fire Farm Institute in collaboration with the Federation of Southern Cooperatives, carries on the legacy of the braided seeds by providing beginning farmers with resources, professional development, and mentorship to support their livelihood on land. The inaugural cohort was drawn from the southeast and northeast, along certain corridors of the Underground Railroad and the Great Migration. We are working to bridge north-south and legacy-returning generations of farmers. “ Opportunities: 18 month program beginning in July and ending in December the following year “ Braiding Seeds fellows receive a $50,000 stipend; a menu of professional development opportunities including 1:1 mentorship, workshops, farm finance and business plan support; cohort gatherings; and individualized coaching.” Mini grants are also awarded to runners up Website: https://www.soulfirefarm.org/food-sovereignty-education/immersion/fellowship/

In Educational Opportunities
Location: Denver metro area Opportunities: “Frontline Farming’s Apprenticeship Program is a path for beginning to intermediate Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) growers who want to gain the fundamental skills needed in the movement toward personal and communal food sovereignty. We provide a culturally supportive and immersive environment for community, education and advocacy. It is our hope and determination to heal the pain and trauma from years of being subjected to systems of oppression throughout our historical bondage and use the knowledge of our ancestors to reconnect to the land for nourishment and reparations. Frontline Farming is a collective farming community dedicated to creating greater leadership opportunities for POC and equity to the existing system of food apartheid. We are proud to be a source of farming practices and spiritual teachings of living in harmony with respect and gratitude to the land. We believe in education and collaboration to encourage engagement in the communities we come from. We provide our harvest to those in our local community that live with little to no access to nutritional whole foods. This program will provide land-based skills to empower leadership as growers and as food activists for the participants and their communities. The training will go over farm planning, soil renewal and deep personal reflection as we affirm historical divorce from the land and reignite our cultural connection to the earth.” Website: https://www.frontlinefarming.org/apprenticeship

In Educational Opportunities
Location: Atlanta, GA Opportunities: One-year apprenticeship (at zero cost) in herbalism ”The Herbalista apprenticeship blends community healthcare and herbal education with passionate service, and typically requires a 1 year commitment. There is no tuition fee for this program. Please note, this is NOT an academic herbal training program and applicants must already have a solid foundation in herbal medicine, including some medicine making, materia medica, and the basics of western medical herbalism. A familiarity with TCM, Ayurveda, or other traditional herbal modality that provides an understanding of energetics is also helpful. If you don’t already have a valid first aid certification, you will need to schedule this training if accepted into our program. As a community health initiative, Herbalista adapts our programming to the changing needs of our community. This has never been more important than during this pandemic. The schedule we have indicated below is what we are currently running, but we ask that all applicants be flexible and understand that details of the apprenticeship program can be subject to change!“ Website: https://herbalista.org/about/apprenticeship-2/
